A book is a movie.

A book is a movie. When you first start reading a book it’s like a movie starts playing in your head. For example, in The Hunger Games you start to envision Katniss and Peeta, you make up what Panem looks like, and you play out what’s going on in the games in your head. You create images of the characters, the place, and all the things that are going on inside the book. The vivid descriptions that authors provide help you to create the movie inside your head and make the book more enjoyable. If an author doesn’t provide these descriptions that make the book come to life, then there is no point in reading it. It becomes a boring and useless book that doesn’t let your imagination run free. In Joe Meno’s, “A book is A Place,” he says, “The fact that books provide us the place to imagine is critically important.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Without having the ability to imagine, we can’t envision the book. A book should leave room to let our minds wonder so that our imagination can set free.
On the e-readers vs. books disagreement, I prefer both. Tom Piazza said, “If there’s no future for books, there’s no future.” I disagree with this statement because I think that they’re will always be a future with physical books. We need them. Many people like the feel of physical books and the fact that you can show them off. E-readers may be becoming increasingly popular, but I don’t believe everything can be done on an e-reader. Of course, your basic reading of a novel can, but I definitely don’t want to be on an e-reader searching through my 600 page college textbook trying to find a passage that I need. I own a Nook, and while I love reading on there, I always find myself missing the feel of reading out of a physical book. The smell when you first open it, bookmarking the pages, and physically seeing myself making progress in the book always gives me an exhilarating feeling.

  1. I like that you say a book is a movie because it makes us imagine the scenes and characters in our head. I think that because we imagine our books to be one way, people are often disappointed when an actual movie of a book comes out, because it isn't like how they imagined it to be in their heads.

  2. I also love the movie analogy because i feel like thats why the physical appearance of the book doesn't matter. Both E-readers and novels will allow you to "play the movie".

  3. I would say its true for most people that was soon as we open a book the wheels begin to turn and the lights fade as we begin our new story.

  4. I completely agree that when you read a book you are playing a movies in your head. It is better than just watching a movie though because you use your imagination to create what the characters and scenes look like.
